What is culturally relevant teaching and how can it benefit my students? Culturally relevant teaching uses students’ previous experiences and funds of knowledge gained from their families and communities as assets in the classroom. This practice affirms student identities, ideas and values. When applied, culturally relevant teaching is an important method to reducing achievement gaps and promoting positive ethnic-racial identities for all students, especially students of color.

***In some cases, bridges are created beyond the classroom by bringing the outside world into the classroom and sending students into the community for service learning to identify problems in their communities and seeking ways to address them.
